Key Points

  • Finland proposes stricter requirements for acquiring citizenship, emphasizing integration, financial self-sufficiency and security

Finland Tightens Citizenship Rules

Finland proposed amendments to tighten the requirements for acquiring citizenship. The changes, submitted to Parliament on 27 March, aim to ensure successful integration, emphasize security and enforce compliance with societal rules.

Key amendments include stricter integrity requirements, where committing offenses will significantly impact eligibility for citizenship. Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient financial resources, excluding those relying solely on unemployment benefits or social assistance.

Additionally, identity verification will be more stringent, requiring applicants to present their national passports if reasonably expected.

The citizenship requirement proposal also includes provisions for revoking citizenship in cases of false information or offenses against Finland’s vital interests. The new rules will take effect on 1 October 2025.
