Canada Ends Flagpoling for Work and Study Permit Renewals

Flagpoling Practices to End in Canada
Canada ended measures allowing foreign nationals to renew work and study permits at a port of entry on 23 December 2024.
This practice, known as flagpole, occurs when a foreign national with a temporary resident status in Canada exits the country and re-enters from the US or St/ Pierre and Miquelon to access immigration services at a port of entry.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires individuals to submit applications and renewals for work or study permits directly through their office. Individuals attempting to flagpole for a work or study permit must submit their application to IRCC unless they qualify for limited exemptions.
