Canada: Extension of Permanent Resident Program for Certain Construction Workers

Key Points

  • Canada extended and expanded a permanent resident program for construction workers in the Greater Toronto Area

Overview

The government of Canada introduced amendments to its permanent residence program for foreign nationals working in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) construction sector. The following changes will take place as a result:

  • The number of foreign nationals supported through the program will expand to 1,000 allotted slots.
  • Applicants will be permitted to apply for permanent residence under the program until 2 January 2024. The program will also permit spouses, partners and dependent children to be included in the principal applicant’s application.
  • Potential applicants will be permitted to submit a form of interest to the Canadian Labor Congress, which determines eligibility for the program.

What are the Changes?

The government of Canada expanded its immigration program for out-of-status construction workers in the GTA. According to the announcement, the program promotes greater stability in the construction industry and ensures that skilled workers in Canada continue to address critical housing development needs.
