Canada: Reduced Work Experience Requirements for Caregivers Applying for Permanent Residency

• Canada will simplify the process for foreign caregiver permanent residency, requiring 12 months of work experience instead of 24 

Overview  

The government of Canada announced that it will reduce work experience requirements for foreign nationals employed as caregivers in order to provide a pathway to permanent residency beginning 30 April 2023. As a result, caregivers will be able to qualify for permanent residency after a period of 12 months. Previously, caregivers were required to have been legally employed in Canada for a period of 24 months.  

Certain designated spaces within the existing caregiver pathways have also been allocated for caregivers who have previously gained work experience in Canada on another work permit type.  

What are the Changes?  

The Canadian government is simplifying the process for foreign national caregivers to gain permanent residency. Starting 30 April 2023, caregivers will only need 12 months of work experience instead of 24 months. The changes will apply retroactively to those currently holding a caregiver work permit.
