Sweden: New Citizenship Requirements

Key Points

  • Sweden introduced stricter requirements for obtaining Swedish citizenship

Overview

The government of Sweden introduced stricter requirements for obtaining Swedish citizenship. Swedish citizenship can be acquired through birth, adoption or the naturalization process.

The government plans to introduce additional qualification measures including the requirement to meet concerns for good conduct and respect for society. It is proposed that an individual who is suspected on reasonable grounds or convicted of certain offenses represents a threat to Sweden’s security or public safety or has ties to certain groups and organizations should not be allowed to acquire Swedish citizenship.

If approved, the law will come into effect on 1 October 2024.
