European Union: Bulgaria and Romania Join Schengen Area

Key Points

  • The European Commission officially approved Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen area on 31 March 2024

Bulgaria and Romania Join Schengen Area

Bulgaria and Romania officially joined the Schengen area on 31 March 2024, bringing the Schengen rules into effect in both countries. This includes the issuance of Schengen visas and the removal of controls at internal air and sea borders.

According to the announcement, Bulgaria and Romania’s accession will enhance the appeal of the Schengen area, making it the largest common area without internal border controls.

The next step involves the Council lifting checks at internal land borders between Bulgaria, Romania, and other Schengen countries. The Commission will continue to support the Presidency of the Council to ensure this decision is made in 2024.
