France Updates TCF IRN Test and Language Requirements

France Introduces New Language Requirements for Citizenship Tests
France will implement updates to the TCF Integration, Residence, and Nationality (IRN) test starting 12 May 2025, enabling candidates to be evaluated up to level B2. These changes align with new French language requirements under Law No. 2024-42, effective 1 January 2026.
Upcoming Language Requirements:
- Naturalization: B2 level (previously B1).
- Resident Card: B1 level (previously A2).
- Multi-Year Residence Card: A2 level (no prior requirement).
Changes to the Test:
- Listening: Increased to 25 questions (20 minutes).
- Reading: Increased to 25 questions (35 minutes).
Existing TCF IRN B1 certificates remain valid for naturalization until the decree is enacted and for other applications until their expiry date. These updates aim to prepare candidates for the evolving standards.
