Healthcare Coverage Extends to Eligible DACA Recipients in November 2024

Starting Nov. 1, 2024, eligible individuals in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program may apply for federal healthcare coverage.

Healthcare coverage for DACA recipients is available through certain federal programs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a final rule on May 3, 2024, giving DACA recipients expanded access to healthcare through two federal programs: the Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA Marketplace) and the Basic Health Program (BHP).

The final rule takes effect on Nov. 1, 2024. For 60 days following the rule’s implementation, DACA recipients may qualify for an enrollment period to choose a health plan through the two available programs. Individuals who apply for coverage during the open enrollment period may have health coverage starting Dec. 1, 2024, through the ACA Marketplace or starting on Nov. 1, 2024, through BHP.

The final rule will extend healthcare coverage to approximately 100,000 previously uninsured DACA recipients.
