India: Citizenship Updates

Key Points  

  • India will reduce certain citizenship requirements for foreign nationals holding specific backgrounds from three different countries  

What Are the Changes to Citizenship? 

The government of India introduced changes to its citizenship law for select foreign nationals. As a result, selection nationals of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh can acquire citizenship faster. Eligible applicants must have: 

  • Entered India on or before 31 December 2024; 
  • Belong to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian communities; 
  • Resided in India for at least six years of the eight years before the submission of the application 

In addition, the government reduced the residency period requirement for foreign nationals applying for naturalization to 11 years.
