Ireland: Increase In Paid Sick Leave Days

Key Points

  • Ireland will increase the number of paid sick leave days that workers are entitled to beginning 1 January 2024

Overview

The government of Ireland will increase the number of paid sick leave days that workers are entitled to beginning 1 January 2024. As a result, the number of days will increase from three to five days.

To qualify, employees must have completed 13 weeks of continuous service with the employer before availing of statutory sick leave.  The employee must provide their employer with a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner, and the certificate must state that the employee named is unfit to work due to illness or injury.

What are the Changes?

The government of Ireland will increase the number of paid sick days to five beginning 1 January 2024. This is in line with the government’s commitment to gradually increase the entitlement until 2026 when it will reach 10 days.
