Italy: Electronic Residence Cards Required for EU Family Members

  • Italy will require all EU family members holding paper residence cards to convert to an electronic residence card by 3 August 2023 

Overview  

The government of Italy will require that all residence cards held by European Union (EU) family members be updated from a paper format to a new electronic format by 3 August 2023. The electronic residence card’s current fee rate is €30.46. Applicants can submit payments at an Italian post office or police station.

The new electronic residence card is valid for 5 years when applying for the first issue and for minors under 18 years of age. It is valid for 10 years for adults who have acquired the right to permanent residence. For a list of required documents for the issuance of electronic residence cards, check here.  

What are the Changes?  

The Italian government will require all EU family members holding paper residence cards to convert to an electronic residence card. According to the government announcement, this change will add additional security standards to residence cards.
