Kuwait Amends Citizenship Law

Key Points  

  • On 23 December 2024, Kuwait updated its rules for foreign nationals looking to acquire citizenship  

Updated Citizenship Rules for Kuwait  

Kuwait published decree-into-law 116/2024, amending the Amiri Decree 15/1959 on citizenship. Key provisions include: 

  • Foreign nationals seeking Kuwaiti citizenship cannot file for a spouse’s nationality, but their minor children become Kuwaitis and can choose another nationality in adulthood. 
  • Foreign national women marrying Kuwaitis cannot acquire Kuwaiti nationality. 
  • Citizenship can be rescinded for fraud, counterfeiting, false statements, criminal convictions or state security concerns. Relatives of those who lose citizenship also lose it.
