Key Points

  • Lithuania introduced stricter requirements for companies employing foreign national employees as of 1 July 2024

Summary of New Rules for Employing Foreign Nationals in Lithuania:

Effective 1 July 2024, the government of Lithuania has tightened requirements for companies employing foreign nationals. Employers must now provide a minimum six-month full-time employment contract and either pay the foreign national at least the average monthly gross salary (currently EUR 2013.8) or provide proof of their qualifications and at least one year of recent work experience. In addition:

  • Companies must operate in the relevant field for at least six months and can employ foreign nationals for no more than four employees all specified by the main employer.
  • Requests to change employers can only be made after six months with the current temporary residence permit.
  • Additionally, employers must have all necessary licenses for the foreign national’s activities and must not have been penalized for immigration-related offenses in the past year. There must also be no reason to believe the company is fictitious or involved in illegal migration. Failure to meet these requirements can result in a six-month ban on employing foreign nationals
