Luxembourg: Changes for Third-Country Nationals

• On 1 September 2023,  Luxembourg introduced new measures aimed at simplifying the hiring process for third-country nationals

Overview 

The government of Luxembourg announced that family members of third-country nationals who hold a residence permit in Luxembourg for the purpose of family reunification will be authorized to work in the country upon arrival beginning 1 September 2023.

As a result of this change, family members will no longer be required to take additional steps to obtain a work permit or authorization for self-employment prior to commencing salaried work. 

In addition, the period of validity of residence permits issued from the date for job search or business creation purposes has been extended from nine months to 12 months.

The government also updated its occupation shortage list in order to attract more foreign nationals. The list will remain valid until the first quarter of 2024.

What are the Changes?

The government of Luxembourg introduced new measures aimed at simplifying the hiring process for third-country nationals. According to the government announcement, this new law will help to reduce skilled labor shortages throughout the country, especially in the health, engineering, finance and information technology sectors.
