Oman: New Labor Law Rules

Key Points  

• Oman updated its labor laws to better protect workers and modified the country’s previous labor laws of 2003 

Overview 

The government of Oman updated its labor laws in July 2023 to provide better support and transparency for workers in the country. New changes to the country’s labor laws include:  

• Increasing paid six leave to up to 182 days and increasing maternity leave to 98 days. The government also introduced paternity leave of seven days.  
• Increasing requirements to qualify for an unlimited fixed work contract so that employees must hold continuous employment in Oman for more than five years. Previously, some employees qualified for unlimited fixed contracts after the first renewal of a contract.  
• Employers are now required to notify an employee of poor performance six months prior to termination. If an employee fails to improve within six months of notification, the employer can terminate the employee.   
• Reduced working hours from eight and a half hours to eight hours a day.  
• Foreign nationals are now permitted to change employers and remain under their original work permit so long as the new employer has been granted authorization from the Ministry of Labor.
