Portugal: Replacement of SEF

Overview  

The government of Portugal will transition its immigration responsibilities from the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) to the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) beginning 29 October 2023. Visa processing delays are anticipated throughout the transition due to large backlogs currently pending with SEF.  

What are the Changes?  

The government of Portugal will replace SEF with an AIMA beginning 29 October 2023. The goal of the transition is to streamline immigration services throughout the country eventually.
