Sweden’s Digital Passport Verification Pilot Program

The government of Sweden introduced a pilot program for digitally verifying passports as part of the residence permit process. Currently, applicants must submit their passport for verification at the nearest embassy office in their country of residence.

The program, known as Freja, will initially operate for foreign nationals in 23 countries. These countries include the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico and the UK.

Through the Freja app, applicants will receive an email offering a digital passport check within a couple of days of submitting of a digital passport check via email within a couple of days of an online application for a work or study permit. The email will contain a personalized link to the e-service that is valid for one week.
