Sweden: Updates for EU Blue Card

Key Points  

  • Sweden will incorporate new measures to its Blue Card category by 1 January 2024  

Overview  

The government of Sweden plans to implement the new Blue Card Directive by 1 January 2024. This includes replacing policies from the 2009 Blue Card Directive and creating a combined residence and work permit for highly skilled foreign nationals. Several other changes include: 

  • Lowering the salary threshold to be granted an EU Blue Card; 
  • Expanding the categories of personnel eligible for an EU Blue Card; 
  • Expanding the possibilities of switching from other types of residence permits to an EU Blue Card.
