The United Kingdom: Recommendations Received on SOL

Key Points

  • The UK received recommendations from MAC, an independent review committee, on proposed changes to the SOL

Overview

The government of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) introduced several recommendations for the country’s Shortage Occupation List (SOL). SOL is used as a measure for allocating the number of work permits issued in the UK. These recommendations include:

  • Adding eight additional occupations to the UK-wide SOL and two additional occupations to the Scotland-only SOL.
  • Ensuring that SOL occupations receive a discount on the minimum income threshold of £26,200.
  • Ensuring that care workers and senior care workers remain on the SOL.
  • Renaming SOL to the Immigration Salary Discount List (ISDL) to reflect its function in the immigration system.
  • Potential to abolish SOL.

Ultimately, the government of the UK will review the proposed measures.
