The United Kingdom: Stricter Rules for Citizenship and Applicants with Criminal Records

Overview  

The government of the United Kingdom (UK) will introduce stricter good character rules for foreign nationals applying for British citizenship effective 31 July 2023. As a result, foreign nationals with a history of a prison sentence that lasted at least a 12-month for a serious crime will not be permitted to apply for citizenship.  

In addition, the government will examine whether applicants for citizenship have observed UK law and shown respect for the rights and freedoms of British citizens. To do so, the government will require information on criminal convictions, immigration offenses, and serious behavior like war crimes, terrorism or genocide. 

What are the Changes? 

On 31 July 2023, the government of the UK introduced stricter rules for foreign nationals applying for British citizenship. Previously, some foreign nationals holding criminal records could apply for citizenship a certain number of years after the end of their sentence.
